Traditional IRA
The Traditional IRA offers certain tax advantage savings. Contributions may be tax deductible and interest earnings are tax deferred. An account must be designated as a Traditional IRA when it is opened in order to receive the special benefits it provides. For many taxpayers the Traditional IRA is a better choice.
Roth IRA
The Roth IRA offers a different type of tax advantage. Contributions are not deductible, but the interest earnings accumulate tax-free. An account must be designated as a Roth IRA when it is opened in order to receive the special benefits it provides. For many tax payers the Roth IRA is a better choice.
Education IRA
The purpose of this new IRA is to give people a tax-advantaged savings vehicle for college expenses. Unlike a traditional IRA, the funds contributed to the account are considered a gift to a beneficiary under the age of 18. The rules are complicated in that distributions from Education IRAs must be coordinated with other education plans such as State Tuition Plans or HOPE and Lifetime Learning Tax Credit.
